  1. Great episode. I love the way you dug into the roots of these songs.

    Here is a tidbit of info that may or may not be relevant when it comes to The Monkees' first album.

    On a 1965 episode of "The Donna Reed Show," Paul Petersen (who played Jeff Stone) sang a song called "I Wanna Be Free."

    This song isn't the same as the Monkees song of the same title, but it was written by Tommy Boyce and Stu Phillips (who went on to work on "The Monkees" series) and shares a few lines with Boyce-Hart's "I Wanna Be Free."

    So I guess Tommy had been playing with the idea for this song for a long while. Sorry I can't remember which "Donna Reed" episode this was in, but the audio made it onto at least one Paul Petersen CD.
