  1. I found it hilarious how a few casual comments from Nez threw all of you into a tailspin. You obviously didn't listen to his words too carefully- he said that he made up the thirty million sales figure. He did NOT say that his statement about the Monkees outselling the Beatles and the Stones combined in '67 was a lie, so relax!

  2. I find it interesting that people tend to take a performer's comments always as gospel, anyway. Yes, they have a different perspective that we, as fans, do, but they also aren't a fan, because they were too busy doing it and living it instead of being entertained by it.

A good example is Groucho Marx who regularly gave his two cents worth on what he thought was a good Marx Brothers movie or not. Most of his opinions were based upon whether he had a good time making the films rather than the films actually being good on their own terms. So, once a project is given a bad review by the people who made it, it usually sticks as fact, whether it is true or not.

Nez may have felt that he made up the sales figures, but his supposed lie may have been actually closer to the truth without him even knowing it. In other words, Nez was actually to busy BEING a Monkee to really pay attention to stuff like sales figures and ratings and stuff, so yes, he probably blurted out the first figure that came into his head in order to have fun with the interviewer, but that figure probably turned out to be closer to the truth than he realized.

Micky also confessed a lie in a later interview claiming that it was he that first stated the Charles Manson auditioning rumor, and that rumor has been stated as fact from time to time.

They are Monkees. They like to have fun!
