As a Monkee and music lover, it teaches me, opens my mind.. adds to my vocab and ways of thinking about their music and all kinds of music, even if I don’t always agree! For example, I love “Hard to Believe” and it completes the album for me .. love hearing a young Davy singing a good ballad and one he wrote.. it’s particularly moving to listen to since he’s passed. He said it was a song he wished got more attention. It’s a mature song for a young man. Don’t know, but perhaps growing up in a home full of classical music, with a father who crooned and then living with guys who were in a rock band, playing a guitar and performing in musicals and singing in acapella groups means I’m so comfortable with ballads, slow or musical numbers and their being mixed in with more up tempo and rock stuff.
Thanks again.. in celebration of the Monkees!
marylkahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15338533794247354052noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1737900938312323315.post-43322073467357945802015-09-14T16:14:54.115-07:002015-09-14T16:14:54.115-07:00True. Both Davy and Mike sound like competing lounge lizards- I wonder if the fact that they share the same birthday has anything to do with it? (Good songs, though.) Also correct on "What Am I Doing Hanging Round?". It does have Nesmith's unmistakable stamp on it. I wonder if he didn't just hand off the credit to his former bandmate as a way of saying thanks. Also, you mentioned that Douglas Dillard played electric banjo on that track. He was best known as a member of the bluegrass-playing Darling Family on the Andy Griffith Show. I guess Mike wanted an "authentic" country feel to the track, even at the risk of pissing Peter off! Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07927617201649795555noreply@blogger.com
